The House of Metaxa proudly reveals to the public METAXA LIKNON, its “Home” on the Greek island of Samos. Built at the heart of a century-old, now organic, vineyard, LIKNON celebrates the origins of the one-of-a-kind Greek spirit and highlights its most prized ingredient: the sweet Muscat wine coming from the mountainous vineyards of Samos. Here, from Spring to Autumn, guests can discover exclusive experiences focused on the craftsmanship and history of METAXA and enjoy tasting sessions of the most emblematic METAXA products, like the METAXA 12 Stars and the Private Reserve METAXA Orama. Immersed in lush nature overlooking the sea, visitors can also wander around the unique building of LIKNON, which has already received 9 accolades for its architecture.
“We created LIKNON, with the vision to anchor METAXA deeper in its heritage tied to Samos, to connect with the local vine growers’ community and -most importantly- to help preserve our treasured Terroir. We chose the name LIKNON, which means “cradle” in Greek to emphasize that METAXA symbolically begins in Samos. Today, METAXA LIKNON is the only place where a guest can get a ticket to a complete encounter with METAXA, from the grape to the bottle…and then to the glass”, shares Huity Konstantinidou, Heritage, Hospitality and Events Director, The House of Metaxa.
Authentic Greek Hospitality
The tours, dedicated to small groups, are guided by a local Samian, who reveals a few of METAXA’s secrets along the way. As the visit unrolls, all senses will be captivated, from sight to a taste of the unexpected.
In the most elevated LIKNON experiences, during sunset hour, the Greek amber spirit finds itself paired with local flavors that further explore its textures. A menu of small bites telling the story of LIKNON and the island of Samos is shared by the guests, in the same way that meals are joyously consumed amongst families and friends in Greece. Vine leaves from the LIKNON vineyard and all kinds of vegetables that grow between the vines and the olive groves in the summer, are accented with extra virgin olive oil from LIKNON’s organic olive grove, literally bringing LIKNON to the table.
During all experiences, delicious cocktails with METAXA expertly mixed by the resident bartender, offer the opportunity to raise the glasses towards the horizon.
LIKNON, an organic vineyard in Samos
Visitors will also be able to learn about the vision for sustainability of METAXA while walking through the organically certified vineyard of LIKNON. This vineyard was acquired by The House of Metaxa in 2017 and since then, its 1.2 hectares of land have been cultivated using organic farming practices.
The organic certification is the fruit of the vision of the 5th Metaxa Master Constantinos Raptis, an experienced winemaker, who in 2020 launched the process of the organic certification, aiming for LIKNON to become an example of sustainable agricultural practices for all the vine growers of Samos. Konstantinos Kalpaxidis, the 6th Metaxa Master continues building on the vision of Constantinos Raptis, thus achieving the organic certification by TUV Austria Hellas in December 2023.
LIKNON a multi-awarded architectural creation
“LIKNON set out to become a place that invites visitors on an emotional journey. We are grateful to have been a part of this design journey for METAXA, especially now that LIKNON is opening its doors to the public, making it increasingly rewarding to see the warm reception from both the design community and visitors” states Dimitris Karabatakis, Creative Director K–Studio, that designed LIKNON.
The main idea of the architects for LIKNON was to incorporate the traditional stone terraces of Samos (“pezoules” in Greek) into their design. The result is so natural that you can barely make out a stone path that stretches up a steep slope, a testament of the determination of the architects to use the sloping terrain of Mount Ampelos in a most creative way.
LIKNON’s ingenious architecture, seamlessly blending with the surrounding landscape, has won international recognition, and is now set out to win the hearts of its new guests.
Three METAXA LIKNON Experiences for the public
Guests can choose between the following options by making a reservation on the website beforehand:
• METAXA “Stars” Tour – 60′ long, guided tour of the vineyard, cellar and tasting.
• METAXA “Signature” Tour – 90′ duration during sunset, tour of the vineyard and cellar and tasting of the most famous METAXA products accompanied by food delicacies.
• Private Events – unique corporate events or special occasions upon request.
